‘Eight points!’ – Pique hits out at referees after controversial Madrid penalty
The Barca defender took aim at Zinedine Zidane’s side following a decision which left a sour taste in the mouth of their opponents
Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has hit out at La Liga officials following a controversial penalty decision that allowed Real Madrid to overcome a two-goal deficit to beat Villarreal on Sunday.
Manuel Trigueros gave the hosts the lead at Estadio de la Ceramica before Cedric Bakambu doubled their lead, only for Zinedine Zidane’s men to stage a dramatic comeback.
Gareth Bale, making his first start in three months following an injury, pulled one back with a header on the hour-mark.
Then, with the ball being moved quickly around the Villarreal penalty box, it struck the arm of Bruno Soriano and Real were awarded the spot-kick, much to the frustration of the home side.
Cristiano Ronaldo converted the resulting penalty, making him the all-time leading penalty scorer in La Liga history, with Alvaro Morata scoring the winner late in the game.
The three points moved Real back above Barcelona in the Liga table, who had beaten Atletico Madrid earlier in the day, which caused Barca centre-back Pique to take to social media.
