Everton’s Mirallas reveals the message he gave Davies to unlock Manchester City
Everton ace Kevin Mirallas has revealed the message he gave to Tom Davies to unlock Manchester City’s defence and has also backed the young Blues midfielder to become an England star.
Big-spending City were humbled at Goodison Park back in January when they suffered a 4-0 thrashing at Everton’s hands.
After fellow Belgian Romelu Lukaku fired the Blues ahead, Mirallas doubled the hosts’ lead with Davies going on to net his first senior goal 11 minutes from the end.
Speaking in the latest issue of Match of the Day magazine, Mirallas has spilled the beans on the advice he gave to the Everton teenager in order to break down Pep Guardiola’s side.
“I said to him to look for me because there is always space behind Yaya Toure and he isn’t following me. Two minutes later he passed to me and we scored!”, declares Mirallas.
The 29-year-old is currently away with Belgium ahead of their World Cup qualifier at home to Greece on Saturday and friendly away at 2018 hosts Russia on Tuesday while Davies is captaining the England Under-19s squad for their three fixtures at St George’s Park, Burton, against Norway (Wednesday); Spain (Friday) and Belarus (Monday).
Mirallas believes Davies is a unique talent though and has tipped the midfielder to grace the senior Three Lions side in the future.
He said: “I think he could play for England because he’s a very good and intelligent player.
“I think in March it’s too soon, but at the end of the season it’s possible, if he continues to play this well.
“He doesn’t remind me of any other player – there’s no other English player like him.
“He’s a box-to-box midfielder, has quality to play No.6 and also No.8.
“Everyone was like ‘wow’ when he scored against City. None of us at Everton have seen Tom score a goal like that in training.”
