Jeremy Mathieu sprains ankle ligaments in Barça’s win over Atletico
Jeremy Mathieu’s inclusion in the Barcelona side against Atletico Madrid was one of the pre-game surprises.
The French defender was part of a back three when Barça had the ball and was at left-back when Luis Enrique’s side were defending.
However, after a solid performance, Mathieu’s afternoon ended prematurely when he was caught by Angel Correa.
“First team player Jeremy Mathieu suffered sprained ankle ligaments in the win against Atletico,” Barça have since confirmed.
“His return will depend on how his injury heals.”
Mathieu, who was removed in the 75th minute and replaced by Lucas Digne, is therefore set for a spell on the sidelines.
In principle it doesn’t seem overly serious, but time will tell how long he’s out for.
Recently the Blaugrana have not revealed how long players will be out of action for.
Javier Mascherano, Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal all missed the win at Atletico with injuries.
