Pique: Barcelona would have always taken PSG comeback over winning at Depor
If forced to pick between a victory of Deportivo La Coruna or a place in the Champions League quarter-finals, Gerard Pique believes Barcelona fans were far more in favour of beating Paris Saint-Germain.
Off the back of a 2-1 defeat in Galicia, the defender was certain that their efforts to win at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night had a big impact on their lacklustre display four days later.
“Everybody in Catalonia would have taken us coming back against Paris Saint-Germain and then losing to Depor,” Pique remarked to reporters. “We will continue fighting to the end and there is a lot of LaLiga still to be played.
“We have many options to win the league.
“This is sport, we are not machines. After the performance on Wednesday it was always going to be hard to compete today.
“We have to congratulate Depor, there have won this game.”
Although the Blaugrana can look forward to their continued European exploits, Pepe Mel’s side taking all three points on Sunday has served as a huge boost to Real Madrid in the domestic race.
“It’s a step back, but in recent months it’s been proved that every team can drop points,” the Spaniard reminded.
“[Depor] also played during the week, it’s not an excuse and the schedule is hard for everyone.
“Every game demands a lot of effort and Wednesday was the same.”
It was not a fully first-choice XI selected at Estadio Riazor although Pique expected those who were picked by the coach to do a better job of winning the match.
“Neymar gives us a lot, but we played a team of sufficient quality to win here,” stated Pique.
“We dominated from the beginning and had control. Making it 1-1 gave us confidence, but after it was 2-1 it became too difficult.”
