PSV concede incredible own goal to end title hopes
PSV’s fading Eredivise title hopes were dealt a crushing blow as goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet picked the ball up over his own line to gift Feyenoord victory.
The stopper fielded a header from Jan-Arie van der Heijden eight minutes from time only to fumble the ball then regather control, before pulling the ball to his chest with his body still behind the line.
The referee was alerted by his watch that the ball had crossed the line and Feyenoord were given the goal to seal their 2-1 win.
Zoet paused for a moment with his hand on the ball but when everything was under control, inexplicably picked the ball up with his body still behind the line.
The result leaves PSV 12 points adrift of Feyenoord in the title race and Zoet fumed at the Hawk-eye intervention.
He told NOS: ‘This is seriously f***** up, the goal-line technology made the difference and things could have been different if it had not.
‘He went only by his watch. If that had not happened, I think he would have said no goal.
‘You should always keep believing in things, but the title is very far away. [It’s] a serious blow.’
Zoet lamented that the moment has passed and even if you look at one thousand images of the goal, nothing will change the outcome.
